New Delhi, The three service chiefs of India’s armed forces called on Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday for a meeting to review the prevalent security scenario along the country’s borders, with particular focus on the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan. The meeting came in the backdrop of Pakistan’s continuous offensive along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir through ceasefire violations ever since India abrogated Article 370 of the Constitution which granted special status to the state on August 5. “Particular focus was given on the threat posed by Pakistan along the LoC with India. The Defence Minister reviewed the prevailing security situation along India’s borders with its neighbouring countries in his meeting with the three service chiefs. Security situation along the entire international border of India was discussed during the course of the meeting,” sources told IANS. As per sources, the three service chiefs — Army Chief General Bipin Rawat, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria and Navy Chief Admiral Karambir Singh — were asked by Rajnath to maintain continuous alert and vigil along the borders...

New Delhi, Insisting that across the world, civilized countries were demonstrating reduced tolerance levels against terrorism, Air Marshal (retd.) C. Hari Kumar, who was the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Air Command, and personally supervised the planning and successful execution of the IAF strikes in Balakot sector told IANS, “It has now become important that countries take a pro-active approach and strike at terrorists at their home bases.” Stressing that the Balakot strikes were an example of perfect synergy between RAW, NSA, Ministry of Defence and the armed forced, he said that obtaining reliable intelligence was paramount in the fight against extremism. “During the Balakot mission, we had precise information, and could therefore avoid collateral damage, something which is very important.” Insisting that the Indian defence forces were anticipating a response to Balakot, and were not caught unawares when the Pakistani Air Force (PAF) jets entered Indian territory through Kashmir a few days after the strikes, Kumar added, “It was just a question of when they would do it. We knew they would, and were fully prepared for it.”..

New Delhi, The US-made heavy-calibre Sig Sauer assault rifles are set to boost the combat lethality of Indian troops. The first batch of these rifles will be given to them this December. As per the deal signed in February by the Ministry of Defence with US arms major Sig Sauer, 72,400 rifles will be purchased at Rs 700 crore. These assault rifles will suit the army’s operational tactic of ‘shoot to kill’ instead of incapacitation’, according to defence experts. These weapons may give an upper hand to troops in insurgency-hit areas. Troops are at present dependent on the INSAS rifles and have to wait for indigenous mass production of AK-203 rifles of Russian origin, the experts say. Army Chief General Bipin Rawat said, here last week, by the end of year the first batch of the Sig Sauer rifles would arrive in a dismantled state and would be provided to troops after being assembled in the country. The INSAS, designed by the Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO) and produced by the state-run Ordnance Factory Board (OFB), was inducted into the army in 1994. But armed forces have not found the weapon reliable in terms of combat lethality, weight and sighting system...

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched modernization and upgradation of defence public sector undertakings and Ordnance Factory Board infrastructure on Monday as part of Atma Nirbhar Bharat (self reliant India) initiative. Singh said Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a clarion call for Atma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan and his 5-I formula of Intent, Inclusion, Investment, Infrastructure and Innovation will put the economy on a high growth trajectory. He said,”Our government has made timely and thoughtful interventions during Covid-19 times like issuing negative list for import, increase in FDI limits, separate budget for domestic capital procurement and emphasis on indigenization.” The minister added that the ban on imports of 101 defence items is a big step towards an Atma Nirbhar Bharat. This list of negative items contains not only small items but weapon systems of high and critical technology. More such items will be added to this list shortly which will save crores of rupees in imports.” Singh said that the government will take more steps towards indigenisation and investment in defence infrastructure and expansion in defence manufacturing capability. “These steps will create big opportunities for the Indian defence industry,” he said. Rajnath Singh said, “Defence industry has always been the forerunner of cutting-edge technologies world across and hence self-reliance in Defence is a tall task which needs whole hearted involvement of all to be fruitful.” He added, “The defence industries have been the force behind the Armed Forces. Today we are proud of our Defence PSUs and OFB for their continued support and sustained efforts towards this.”..

Kiev, (Samajweekly) Ukraine began negotiations with an Iranian delegation on compensation for the plane of Ukraine International Airlines (UIA), which was shot down near Tehran earlier this year, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Facebook. “Today in Kiev, Iranian delegation started the negotiations on compensation for Iran’s shooting down of the Ukrainian International Airlines PS752 flight. We have been striving for a long time to start the negotiation process, and I welcome the beginning of negotiations,” said the diplomat on Thursday, Xinhua news agency reported. Kuleba noted that the process would not be easy, but Ukraine will do everything to achieve maximum compensation for the relatives of the victims of the plane crash. The Boeing-737, en route from Tehran to Kiev, was shot down by two rockets shortly after takeoff from Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport on Jan. 8. The tragedy resulted in the deaths of all 167 passengers and nine crew members on board, who were citizens of Ukraine, Iran, Canada, Sweden, Afghanistan, and the United Kingdom. Later, Iran’s armed forces confirmed that an “unintentional” launch of a military missile by the country was the cause of the incident. The transcript of the black boxes from the plane confirmed the fact of illegal interference with the plane. Earlier this month, Kuleba said it was too early to blame human error for the downing of the airliner and that many questions remained unanswered...
