Islamabad, Ahead of a verdict in the foreign funding case against Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), Pakistan’s ruling party has raised questions about impartiality of Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd.) Sardar Muhammad Raza. Raza is likely to issue a verdict in the foreign funding case before his retirement on December 6. Prime Minister Imran Khan presided over the PTI’s core committee meeting on Sunday and reiterated the party’s demand that Election Commission hear cases of all three major political parties – PTI, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), simultaneously and refrain from singling out PTI. “The ECP should follow rules, give equal opportunities to all the parties and conduct across-the-board accountability,” Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan told reporters after the core committee’s meeting. New Delhi, (Samajweekly) The Congress will constitute a three-member committee to look after the grievances of sulking Congress leader Sachin Pilot, who met Rahul Gandhi on Monday. The party said that the two leaders held a frank, open and conclusive discussion. In a statement, party General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal said, “Congress President Sonia Gandhi has decided that the AICC will constitute a three-member committee to address the issues raised by Sachin Pilot, the aggrieved MLA, and arrive at an appropriate resolution thereof.” “Sachin Pilot has met former Congress President Rahul Gandhi and expressed his grievances in detail. They have had a frank, open and conclusive discussion. Sachin Pilot has committed to working in the interest of the Congress party and the Congress government in Rajasthan,” said the statement. The Congress had sacked Pilot as Deputy Chief Minister and Rajasthan Congress President. So far, Gehlot has stayed put as the Chief Minister amid claims and counter-claims on attempts to poach MLAs. Ottawa, (Samajweekly) Jagmeet Singh, the leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP), was temporarily expelled from the House of Commons or the lower chamber of the bicameral Parliament for calling an MP racist and for refusing to apologize and withdraw his comments. On Wednesday, Speaker Anthony Rota kicked Singh, a turbaned Sikh who is the first visible minority to lead a major national Canadian political party, out for the rest of the day after he called Bloc Quebecois Alain Therrien racist for refusing to support an NDP motion dealing with systemic racism in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), CBC News reported. Singh tried to get all parties in the House of Commons to agree to a motion recognizing the existence of systemic racism in the RCMP. The motion points out that “several Indigenous people have died at the hands of the RCMP in recent months”. The motion also asked MPs to support a review of the RCMP’s budget, to demand that it releases all of its use-of-force reports and to call for a review of the RCMP’s tactics for dealing with the public. Therrien was the only MP in the House who refused to support the motion prompting Singh to call him a racist. Following his remark, Deputy Speaker Carol Hughes said that she would review the record because she did not hear Singh when he stood up and said: “It’s true, I called him a racist and I believe that’s so.” Singh was asked by Hughes to apologize, which he refused. In its petition, Pakistan’s foreign ministry requested that the verdict in the high treason case be held back until a new prosecution team is formed, Samaa TV reported. A similar petition was filed by Musharraf separately on Saturday requesting the Lahore High Court to suspend the special court’s reserved verdict which was heard on Monday. The Lahore High Court has asked Musharraf’s lawyer to present two-point statements on Tuesday and assist the court regarding the maintainability of the petition. The court instructed him to present his arguments on the following points: How can the LHC hear the petition if there are proceedings against Musharraf ongoing in the Supreme Court? and Musharraf is a resident of Islamabad – how is the petition maintainable in Lahore? Musharraf’s lawyer, Khwaja Ahmed Tariq Rahim said that since Musharraf is out of the country for his treatment he can’t appear before the court...

Pranab Mukherjee on ventilator support after brain surgery

New Delhi, (Samajweekly) Former President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday underwent brain surgery to remove a clot at the Army Research & Referral Hospital and is on ventilator support after the procedure, sources said.
