Don’t spit, chew tobacco in public places: Punjab minister

Chandigarh, (Samajweekly) Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu on Sunday appealed to the public not to spit or chew tobacco in public places as it spreads infectious diseases, including COVID-19 and tuberculosis. Now, there is a provision of a Rs 500 penalty for spitting in public places. Speaking on the occasion of World No-Tobacco Day, Sidhu said the state government has launched a statewide awareness campaign to highlight the deadly effect of smokeless tobacco use and motivate people to quit especially amidst the coronavirus outbreak. The evidence-based campaign includes the launch of a pre-tested public service announcement entitled “I Don’t Believe”, which focuses on the health harms that smokeless tobacco users are prone to, and are at a heightened risk for cancer compared to non-users. Nandita Murukutla, Vice President of the Global Policy and Research, Policy, Advocacy and Communication, Vital Strategies, said hard-hitting mass media campaigns are a powerful tool in tobacco control. “We commend the state’s health department on the timely launch of ‘I Don’t Believe’ and promoting the campaign widely across Punjab. By showing the deadly health harms of tobacco use, the campaign will encourage current smokeless tobacco users to quit.”..

Alexanda Kotey and El Shafee Elsheikh, who are currently under US military custody in Iraq, are accused of being the last two members of an IS execution squad dubbed “The Beatles” because of their British accents, the BBC reported. In a letter to UK Home Secretary Priti Patel, US Attorney General William Barr said on Wednesday the US authorities would not seek the death penalty against the two men and “if imposed, it will not be carried out”. In the light of the assurances, he said he hoped the UK would share “important evidence” about the men promptly. “If we receive the requested evidence and attendant cooperation from the UK, we intend to proceed with a US prosecution. “Indeed, it is these unique circumstances that have led me to provide the assurance offered in this letter,” the BBC quoted Barr as saying in the letter. In response, a Home Office spokesman said on Thursday the UK “continue to work closely with international partners to ensure that those who have committed crimes in the name of IS are brought to justice”. The two men were British citizens, but have been stripped of their UK nationality. Washington, A federal court jury in Washington found Roger Stone, one of the advisers closest to President Donald Trump, guilty on all charges in a case related to the supposed Russian interference in the United States elections of 2016. Stone, 67, now faces a maximum penalty of 50 years in prison for the seven charges brought against him, including lying to Congress, though he is expected to get off with a much lighter sentence since this is his first conviction, Efe news reported on Friday. Trump wasted no time in slamming the “double standard” of the court in comparing the crimes committed by Stone with the behaviour of former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and the ex-director of the FBI, James Comey, among others. “So they now convict Roger Stone of lying and want to jail him for many years to come,” Trump complained on Twitter. ..

SC verdict defining telecom operators’ AGR soon

New Delhi, The Supreme Court is expected to soon pronounce its judgment on a case relating to the definition of adjusted gross revenue (AGR) of telecom operators. The judgement, expected on Thursday, assumes significance as telecom operators might be required to pay around Rs 92,000 crore as outstanding licence fee, penalty and interest. The AGR definition issue has been going on various tribunals and courts between the operators and the government for a number of years. At present, the government is entitled to get 8 per cent of a telecom operator’s AGR as licence fee. However, the Department of Telecommunications wants to include other revenue streams, such as income oninterest and from handset sales amongst others, in the AGR. On the other hand, telecom operators argue that AGR should only constitute revenue from core operations. If it goes against them, the judgement can have an adverse impact on telcos which are already suffering from severe financial stress...
